Growing Zones

Each tree on this website contains a "growing zone" tag - a map, similar to the one above, provides reference for those numbers. Growing zones are regions designated by the USDA across the United States to easily identify where plants grow best. For more information, and a map that includes Alaska and Hawaii, visit the link below.

Glossary

These are words used across the website that you may not be familiar with.

Conifer - usually evergreen tree that contains true cones

Evergreen - a type of tree, usually with needles, that remains green throughout the year

Deciduous - a type of tree that sheds its leaves cyclically each year

Cambium - cellular plant tissue

Bilateral Symmetry - right and left side of midline are mirror images of one another

Snag - dead tree that remains standing, often providing a home or food for various animals

D.B.H. - Diameter at breast height, about 4.5 feet above the ground, where tree trunks are measured
