What's this?

The Chinese Witch Hazel is most known for its blooms. Yellow and red elongated flowers emerge each year before the tree produces foliage, usually in early spring. The smell of these flowers is described to be sweet but spicy. This tree is smaller than most, and sometimes categorized as a large shrub. This plant grows with multiple trunks, all branching out from a common point at the base. Due to its early blooming and bright flowers, this plant is a favorite for the year’s first pop of color.

Foliage

Leaves are oval in shape, with white striations. Foliage turns yellow in the fall.

Seeds or Cones

This plant produces dry capsules that hold seeds which cluster along stems. Each pod holds two, black seeds. They are brown in color and rounded.
