This tree is often thought to be a giant of the West, most easily identifiable by its shaggy bark and red hue. The fibrous bark can be easily peeled away (although not recommended for the longevity of the plant) and is the giver of life to a multitude of native animals. These trees reach extreme heights and diameters of over 150 feet tall and 15 feet wide, meaning snags, or dead trees left standing, provide homes for a diverse array of animals. Bears, owls, and swifts, all benefit from the remains of a Red Ceder long after it is gone. This tree had scaly leaves that branch out both from a central stem, and then again from a smaller stem. The optical effect is that of a fan, protruding from each branch. These trees are a popular choice for outdoor building, such as fences and decks, due to their weather resistant nature and resistance to rot. A Red cedar can remain fallen for over 100 years and sustain negligible water damage. These trees can live up to 1,000 years old!

Foliage
Western Red Cedar leaves are scaly and elongated, forming a fan shape. Each leaf forks multiple times and exists as a part of the larger foliage base. These leaves are soft to the touch, and can be easily torn, similar to other members of the Cupressaceae, or Cypress family.
Seeds or Cones
This tree is a conifer, meaning that it produces cones. The Red Cedar cones are small, oval shaped, and form in a group with others. They begin as a bright green, and turn brown and brittle once maturity is reached. The cones open into a shape often compared to a small rose. These cones do not hang from the tree, but rather stick straight up off of the branch.
