This tree, a member of the Pine family, is identifiable by its expansive canopy of needles and wide reaching branches. Not many other pines cover nearly as much space, or grow such bushy needles. This tree is evergreen, meaning it keeps its foliage year round. These plants are eaten by a wide variety of animals, who find its tender shoots and soft bark enticing. Deer love to eat the tops of young pines, stunting their growth and sometimes killing the plant entirely.

Did you know?
Nibbling down shoots isn’t the only problem caused by deer for these pines. Deer also like to shelter under these trees, rubbing their antlers and fur against the bark. Over time, a White Pine can sustain enough deer damage to kill the entire tree.
